I am a second-year university student studying Honours Bio-Organic Chemistry at McGill University. In high school, I did the IBDP program and graduated with 39 IB points and Honour Roll. In my free time, I dance ballet, I like to crochet and knit, and I write poetry. I've been tutoring students from kindergarten age to high school since 2020 in Math, English, Chemistry, French and so many more subjects!
I've been tutoring for 4 years and I'm still as passionate about helping other students as I was when I started. My first tutoring experience was as a peer Math and Science tutor throughout high school. I also tutored with the Jamaican Canadian Association in high school, mostly students from Kindergarten age to Grade 6. Since beginning university, I've tutored over 30 students from Grade 5 to University-level with Varsity Tutors, and I've tutored many more independently here on MayaThe Tutor.ca!
When I tutor I ask myself how I can lead a student to understanding, instead of whether the student will be able to understand, because I believe every student has the potential to understand and excel in all subjects. A positive growth mindset is the foundation of academic success and achievement, so I work to encourage my students' faith in themselves and build resilience and the ability to push through challenges.
My tutoring style, though it will vary slightly based on goals and level for each individual student, always uses a very practice-heavy approach. I am a huge supporter of using drills when learning new topics so that students are able to put the concepts they're learning into use. I also believe that doing practice questions and mini quizzes in a low-stakes environment will make students much better prepared and feel less stressed when going into a test or exam conditions.
While the end goal is different for every student: passing a class, getting into their dream university, catching up to grade level, my commitment remains the same. Every student deserves to achieve and surpass their academic goals, and I am here to help.
I am studying towards a Bachelor of Science degree at McGill University, in Honours Bio-Organic Chemistry. I currently have a 3.80 GPA, including As in Organic Chemistry I, II and III. In 2023, I was awarded the Lionel Chemistry Award from the Chemical Institute of Canada. Graduating high school, I was given the Trustee Excellence, English and Dramatic Arts awards. I've been tutoring for over 4 years with here and with various trusted organizations.
